I got the rudder idea from an article in Small Craft Advisor magazine, but I used a length of 3/4" Galvanized pipe threaded into a floor flange which is mounted to a piece of pine 1 x 4 that is drilled out in the center of the floor flange and that is what the 1/2" Aluminum rudder shaft passes through.

OK, so the rudder doesn't work...at least not very well. I think I am going back to using the "steering oar", one on one each side. They actually are much more convenient than trying to pull the rudder lines, and as a bonus, it easy to claw through a tack by giving a few stokes with the steering oar.
I am going to sail tomorrow (11-7-09) FINALLY!!!
SORRY, i HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DIG UP THE SAIL DIMENSIONS...I WILL KEEP LOOKING

Good point about the steering oar. A light craft like a canoe is bound to be prone to, 'stand in irons' especially in light air. However don't give up on playing with the rudder for heavier winds, maybe try a tiller.
Glad your still with us

Move your leeboards back about a foot and see if that helps.
