From Wales Dear Editor, My name is Paul and have been canoeing for 20yrs, I've paddled all over the world and would much appreciate a share of stories and information from any like minded canoe heads like my self, even though I'm from wales, my wife is from Vancouver and her family is still in Canada, I would enjoy sharing my many pictures with any body that would be interested and extended a welcome to anybody that is thinking of a paddle trip to the UK. Many thanks! ~ Paul L. Welcome, Paul! I think you are our first Welshman! Don't forget to sign up for the forum so you can share with all the other CSM subscribers! Happy sailing! From Quebec (De Québec) Hi everybody. I enjoy sailing canoe very much, since last summer 2008. I constructed outriggers, rudder, leeboards, one jibsail, purchased mainsail, and went sailing on beautiful lake Taureau. I have to say I feel alone, I never saw anyone else sailing a canoe. But I keep on having faith. Your online magazine is awesome and helpful. I have few video clips on You Tube under username GRAFOPHONE. Hopefully they may be useful to other canoe sailors, or give taste to those who hesitate. I usually speak French, my English is not always correct, but to enjoy canoe sailing belongs to all languages. ~Regards, Yvon R Lalonde Welcome Yvon! We're happy to know you enjoy Canoe Sailing Magazine. Don't feel alone, most of us are the only canoe or kayak sailors in our areas, too! Welcome to the crew! Most Honorable Reader Dear Canoe Sailing Magazine, Very glad to have found your magazine. Need I say you fill an important gap in the canoe sailing world. Great articles and atmosphere. I've been an avid canoe sailor here in Japan for 2 years now. Before that made many homemade rigs back in the Mid-Atlantic states. Now sailing an Aquamuse 141, it is an incredible boat. Hope to share some pictures, videos and stories with your readers soon. ~Sincerely, John, Hyogo, Japan John, welcome and thank you! We're happy to fill those gaps in canoe sailing and are equally pleased to hear from readers all over the world. We have several readers like yourself from Japan and I'd like to encourge you to consider scheduling a regatta for yourselves. I'll make you a deal--you hold a regatta and we'll send you Canoe Sailing Magazine T-shirts or hats!
Working on a new canoe.... What a marvelous thing was to find this e-mag. I have been sailing since I was a little kid, and sailing canoes specifically for only for about 20 years when I purchased had a Grumman 17 with a lateen rig. This canoe was a great sailing, to the extent that I did quite long trips on her. regreattably, I had to move, and couldn't take her so I sold her. Five years ago I got another aluminum canoe, this time I don't even know the brand, and made a sail for it out of an old sailboard rig, but it didn't satisfied me, so now I'm in the process of building a MacGregor 16 canoe designed by Ian Oughtred. (I haven't decided on the sail type yet). I expect to have her in the water by the end of this year. I love Hugh Horton's concept, ideas and designs. I wish I had connected with him before I commited myself to the MacGregor. ~ Regards, Julio Thanks for writing, and the good words, Julio! Please keep us up to date on how your new Mac is coming. Send us some photos and maybe a few words about it. Happy build! A Note From Deepest, Darkest Canada.... Wow, a canoe sailing magazine online! Wonderful. I have been a small boat sailor most of my life. A canoeist, paddler, for several years. I have dreamt about combining the two. Now I have a great source of information all in one place. Thanks. ~Paul Glassen, Nanaimo, British Columbia,Canada Paul, great to hear from you! Thank you very much; it's notes like your that make that hard work worthwhile. Let us know if there's something special you would like to see! Most Welcome Warm Fuzzies...
This issue continues the outstanding quality of the first issue. I was going to mention an outstanding article, but every one was most interesting; Hugh Horton on Bufflehead was of special interest, as I plan to build one as soon as we get relocated to PA, Todd Bradshaw on sail reefing design, every one very nicely done. Also the antique canoe articles are especially interesting. Keep up the good work. Your e-magazine makes me think of what "Messing About In Boats" would be if it were an on-line magazine. ~Jim Brown
Thank you, Jim! I'm happy to hear that my editorial instincts are on-track. I hope to continue to provide you the kind of articles and information you're looking for. Please let me know if there's anything special you'd like to see!
A Reader Suggests... Fantastic magazine. How about a series of articles about making a sailing canoe for absolute beginners. What hull should I look for (or make). What sail should I look for? Some tips and tricks. Etc. Thanks ~Bob Great idea, Bob! Maybe another reader would like to share his own experience with us? The Rudder Forum would be a great p[lace to post this suggestion, too! Thanks for the kudos!
Reader Returning to Canoe Sailing Hi Ed, I found the e-mag very interesting, I'm glad I ran across it. I am fairly new to canoe sailing as the last time I was in a sailing canoe. I was about ten+ years old, 55+/- years ago. lol A big old Town canoe with a sail rig on it, we would put it in the Catskill Creek and sail all day on the Hudson River. The early French and Indians used the river a lot for fur trade & basic transportation. The town of Hudson, directly across the river from Catskill was famous with large sailing boats, because the river flats there were fresh water at low tide & salt at high tide. All the New England whale hunting ships would sail up there to rid their hulls of barnacles. All the working people from town would come down to the shore and work with scrapers. & do minor ship repair. ...for the last 20+ years I have been away from the big water, except for short excursions. Now I'm on my way back. So I am glad to have your e-Mag's as one of my guides. ~ Bryan Leeds, NE, Pa. Thanks, Bryan--welcome back! Glad we could be there when you needed us. Check back often for updates, readers' photos of their boats, letters to the editor [like this one] and the forum. Be sure to ask for help and guidance from your fellow canoe sailors in the forum--The Rudder!
