A gorgeous Algonquin and a venerable Klepper Aerius II

John Haugen-Wente  Madison, Wisconsin

An American Traders Algonquin

My American Traders  Algonquin is red cedar covered by canvas.  Painted topsides, and Shellacked bottom (for ease of sliding over rocks). 16' long, 34.5 inches wide, with a shallow arched bottom, and moderate rocker.  I have owned it for 8 years.  What makes this boat so wonderful is its ability to handle any and all conditions with such ease and grace.

It sails beautifully with my 38 sq. ft. Balogh Rig.  Because it has closely spaced ribs, and heavier canvas it has proven itself to be very tough on many rivers, including whitewater runs. It turns on a dime, and tracks efficiently enough.  But the best part is that I have no trouble handling it solo, and it still has enough volume to take 2 people or 1 person on an extended trip.  I almost forgot to mention that it is stunningly beautiful to look at; I love the Algonquin.  There are faster canoes, lighter canoes, less expensive canoes but I don't think there is another canoe that has met my paddling needs so well.  Whether I'm on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, running down a Canadian River, or exploring the backwaters, creeks, and streams of Southern Wisconsin it is simply perfect.

Klepper Aerius II

This is my 50 year old Klepper Aerius II with a 38 sq. ft. 2 year old Balogh Sail Rig, with Boss Outriggers.  I have flown my Klepper to Florida every spring for the past 10 years, as well as using it in Madison, WI, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. Incredible in every way.

In this picture I am dropping the sail before I attempt a crazy surf landing in wild conditions.
