Steve Clark lives in Warren Rhode Island. He grew up on a one-family island in Marion Ma where a boat ride was part of every day; summer and winter, which educated him in many more aspects of boats and boat handling than the usual enthusiast. Over the years he's been more or less fascinated by sailing efficiency and performance, best stated by asking, “How well can this boat sail and how well can I sail it?” and “What should I change to make ordo it better?” Given the above, it probably isn’t odd that he should gravitate to International Canoes, 14s, A Class and C Class Catamarans where one has the freedom to experiment. Steve also ended up in the boat business and until April, 2007, was the Co-owner and Chairman of Vanguard Sailboats, builder of Lasers, Sunfish, 420s, Optimists and many other boats. Vanguard built Olympic class boats and built the 45 Finns used in the Barcelona Olympics, so it was a 20+ year soup to nuts experience. Since selling the company, Steve continue to design and build little boats in a one man shop. As of this writing, he's having a landmark experience at the International Canoe World Championship. His son Willy, nephew Oliver Moore and he will be sailing in boats built to Steve's design. His youngest son, David, will be sailing a 1962 Lou Whitman design he modified to the new class rules in summer, 2007. Canadian entry Rob Paterson will be sailing Steve's 2006 design “Wonk,” so it will be a real chance to see if what he thinks is “right” actually works over a range of conditions.
