Good all-around choice. (Thanks for shopping through CSM) I sail a 16-foot White style canoe--no keel, flat river-type bottom--with a 40-foot lateen sail. Does well on days with decent wind. (I'll upgrade it to my 54-foot sprits'l soon)I've sailed it up to 25k winds. Don't use outriggers, either. Don't start with them and you'll probably never need them. Leave the 'training wheels' off and learn to sail if you're physically capable. That being said, outriggers allow one to sail in worse conditions, but pushing an open canoe to its limits, or beyond, requires the ability to swim....

I see many canoe sailors without outriggers and they go very well. My reason to use outriggers is for safety. I once capsized and didn't find the experience very funny. My wife and I wanted to sail a canoe but she was scared to death. That's why I constructed my outriggers: Safety first and more versatility to be able to load the canoe with camping gear, (motor, electric or gas Outboard), camcorder, cameras, and other stuff and still have in mind my weekend or vacation will be pleasant. My wife appreciate very much sailing now!
That being said, I understand and have a high respect for those who sail without outriggers, after all we are in the same sport!!!! Thanks Ed for your help in this topic.
