A New Magazine – The Only One in its Field
CANOE SAILING MAGAZINE
Special Advertising Plan

First off, our promise to our readers and advertisers:

At Canoe Sailing Magazine, our allegiance to the reader comes first. We will not knowingly carry content or advertising that we deem to be insulting or inappropriate, nor will we advertise a product we would not consider using ourselves. Advertising will be subtle and respectful of the readers, our crewmates. No “pop-up” type ads will be employed and only the rare, appropriate ad will be included in an article. And we will never sell or otherwise distribute data about specific readers or their contact information.

Online advertising has its challenges and complications, and an advertiser sometimes gets lost in the mix regardless of what they do. Additionally, it requires a dedicated staff on the publisher’s part to find, enroll, and maintain advertisers and their accounts.

Let’s be frank about the issue we both understand well enough, and cut to the chase: Canoe Sailing Magazine (CSM) needs to have advertisers both to serve its readers and to generate income; You need to advertise to sell your product; and neither of us wants to make it happen with any more work than needed to get the job done well.

Here’s my plan for advertising. I believe it is simple, affordable and effective. As CSM grows, we will most likely modify this plan, or rely on a more conventional one, but for now, let’s see how you like the Special Advertising Plan.

-Ads are of just four basic types:

-Real Estate. Ads that are found on pages in reserved ad blocks, typically 160 x 200 pixels in the right hand column, or 500 x 88 pixels at the page bottom. They can occur on every available page, or just adjacent to certain types of articles.

-Article Sponsorships. An advertiser can sponsor an article that highlights a product he is interested in. This could be a piece about a restoration project that successfully used a paint remover, or even an article about an issue the advertiser finds important—it’s the advertiser’s choice. There will be a prominent notice about the article’s sponsor and additional information and links to the advertiser will be included in the article.

-Resources.
ALL paid advertisers will have a permanent listing in the Resources page as long as they want to and they are in good standing. Those companies who have a limited budget can buy a basic listing on a month-to-month basis.

-Advertorials. Advertorials are the meat and potatoes of effect online advertising in Canoe Sailing Magazine.

-CSM advertorials are promotional articles about your product that are written, and read, as conventional articles. Each will carry a small label stating it is a paid ad, in accordance with the ethics code of the American Society of Magazine Editors. Advertorials can carry hot links, images, etc.

-Your advertorial Package will essentially become a permanent part of the magazine.
--It will run on the front page and be listed in the menu of the issue for which it is purchased.
--During the next issue, it will be listed in the front page menu for the prior issue.
---(That’s two months on CSM’s front page)---
--After that, it will remain searchable in the archives until such time as you want it removed.

Additionally, your product or company will be listed and hot-linked in our “Resources” page until such time you want it removed.

Remember—you are buying front page coverage for two months, life in the archives and a spot on the resources page for what works out to be a very small investment over the lifetime of the advertorial and its associated resource listing. Also remember—you will be reaching a global audience that may never see your ads or writeups about your products in ANY other publication.
